A chance to make the first step towards your career

When media and experts are talking about unemployment, they usually talk also about young people. Currently national job markets are tough especially to the university graduates. There are examples of countries like Spain among which the number of unemployed and employed young people almost equals. What is the reason of such a situation? For sure one of them is crisis, but often another one is young people’s lack of practical experience.

Studies are great time. Studies is an experience, which shapes our views, personality etc. for whole our life. Studies also should give a good start to professional career, but looking into the unemployment statistics it’s hard to say that they fulfill they role. Maybe universities and other schools need a couple of years to accommodate to the current realm, but young people need jobs right now. Despite reforms of higher education, each one of students should take care of his or her future.

A student has a few possibilities to enrich his resume. Interesting are internships and scholarships, which allow students to apply their theoretical knowledge into real life. Internships usually last from one to three months, but there are also 6 months and longer. Longer internships are usually organized by the biggest players in each sector of economy. They are also renowned and recruitment process for open positions is basically the same as with full time jobs.

Internships and trainings might be paid or unpaid. This depends on the employer, sometimes universities or governments are providing reimbursements or grants for students undertaking the internship. Wages for paid internships are usually lower than for full time job, and they start from even $200, which is actually nothing more than reimbursement of the basic costs, up to even $2000 per month. As in case of the length of the internship, also same rule applies to height of salaries – bigger and better company usually offers their trainees better money.

Except earning crucial experience and some money, which can help student’s budget, there is another, long-term advantage of doing internships. This benefit is probably worth much more than money got from hosting company, and this experience will pay back in number of different ways for long years. After graduation employers will look at your resume with true interest and appreciation. And you should remember that the longer your internship is, and the stronger brand your supervising company has, the bigger are your chances in the future job market.

Remember, that studies are not to shovel the knowledge to your head, but they should teach you how to learn and improve by yourself. Learn in classrooms, but don’t forget that it’s just a part of your education process which first, last the whole your life; second, continues everywhere. Internship or training will help you to supplement your knowledge and make first steps into your future career.

Be visible!

Many people complain a lot about lack of job and job offers, problems with communication between them and potential employers, etc. Often those who complain are well qualified specialists. On the other hand also employers complain that they cannot find well qualified employees for many positions. You don’t need to be genius to see here contradictory. What then is the reason of this situation?

I would say – lack of information and information circulation. Both sides are to blame, but in a few simple steps you can overcome this problem. I could generally say – be visible! – the easier and shorter is the way between you (your resume)  and your future employer the bigger chances you have to find a job. How increase your visibility? Currently employers are looking for new employees in Internet, so you should be active, and ubiquitous.

First, create your profiles in professional social networks. Currently the biggest one is LinkedIn, which contains 200 m users, but a lot of companies are using it to contact candidates directly. You should fill up all the needed information – personal details, education, experience, skills and other. Another thing which will increase your visibility here is participation in groups and building network of connections. There are of course also smaller networks, branch networks, and local networks. It’s good to be active there as well. Especially professionals from specific niches should remember about it – companies operating in narrow segment of, let’s say, IT market, first would rather use IT networks than general.

Second, remember about your profile in the most popular social networks like Facebook.com, Twitter.com etc. Even though their purpose are different, they can help you get a job. For example in Facebook.com you can find Branch Out app, which basically could be separate professional social network. Find, open and use it. Also fill in your work history in your profile on Facebook.com, so your friends can see how your career develops. Remember that “networking” is the main keyword in nowadays business. All of your friends are potential HR agents, so let them know what is going on in your professional life.

Third, another way employer is looking for candidates are recruitment websites. They are usually huge databases with search engine and here employees are looking for job announcements. Despite this, you have to remember that they give also opportunity to fill in a candidate profile, upload resume etc., so employer can find you! Important thing is that employers usually use just one of tens of them. Fill in your profile in at least the biggest and the renowned ones. Most of them give a possibility to subscribe a newsletter with jobs from a category, position or for a selected keyword(s). That’s the easiest way to keep updated.

Fourth, if you are professional you should think about your own blog. Each another expert post brings more and more audience to your site. Among those who read it are other professionals – often journalists, bloggers, etc., so your opinions can be reprinted in many other sources. Among your readers are also employers who can often look for their top specialists by exploring this type of sources.

Fifth, similar way to bring up your visibility are also articles and guest posts in expert newspapers and blogs. If you are really good in what you are doing, what not to share it? Write an article even for niche magazine, for professional blog, and add you bio with link to your personal site, profile on professional social network or blog.

Of course, that’s just a part of you can do to increase your chances to get invitation from your future employer, but they will help you. So remember, be visible!
